Thanks to Ivor for the image. Obviously I have blanked out the sender
details. This is a REAL mail.box file. Users complained that
the server was crawling and when the administrator checked, nrouter.exe
was running at 99%cpu. Looking at the mail.box file kinda made it
obvious as to why. Well, I have never seen a message this size before.
Anyone care to challenge??? PS – The server didn’t crash and
most likely would have eventually routed the mail. Wow! Any suggestions
on how to deal with the offending user?

Lycos is now offering a concept that allows users to download a screensaver
that launches a denial of service attack on spam friendly websites as a
method to fight spam friendly sites. Details are on http://www.makelovenotspam.com.
An interesting concept, but surely this eats bandwidth on the end
user that already loses bandwidth to spammers. Is this not a "lose
lose" situation. I can
see that Chris
Linfoot has his thoughts …
Thanks to Mr Murphy for telling me about this software. For those
that haven’t tried it, Keyhole
is a global mapping application, with an outstanding interface and amazing
imaging (using satellite photographs) of major cities around the world.
Users can "fly" from one point on the Globe to another
and zoom into and view buildings around the world. The images for
the locations are streamed and then cached on your pc. Recently
acquired by Google, the annual
subscription of this software has been slashed from $70 to $30 per annum.
The 30 trial version is perfect to see what you will be getting,
and there are many assurances that other areas around the world will be
mapped in such detail as, for example 5th Avenue in NYC. The education
perspective alone to this product is great, and I really envy kids studying
Geography in school at the moment with access the resources like this.
We have already tied in a mapping product with Lotus Notes applications
for a customer, calling an imaged map of an area based on data entered
in an accident report. The difference in Keyhole is that real images
are used, not just mapflow images. I would imagine that Google could
resell services based on the Keyhole mapping engine to application platforms
in the future.
The images of Ireland are very basic, as obviously they have concentrated
on major cities to gain maximum subscriptions at the moment. What
I found morbidly amusing though is the fact that although a massive part
of the planet is not covered in detail, detailed imaged maps for
Iraq, Afghanistan, and North Korea are in the application. I wonder
why so many detailed maps of these areas are available ;-)
May have been just me… I only
upgraded my mail file template to ND7 today and noticed my mail rules stopped
working. Easy solution. Just disable and re-enable them and
they were fine.
I was discussing the integrated IM client
with a site that had it deployed recently. To be honest, they are
completely raving about the product. The users love Lotus Notes now.
As per usual, there were company grumblings of how rubbish this Lotus
Notes thing is, compared to their Outlook client at home. Now they
have ND6 and Single Sign on to Sametime, it has added a completely new
aspect to the product. Next stop is adding the IM functionality
to their apps…..
As a slight criticism, it was
pointed out that the UI of the sametime client is quite poor compared to
the UI of the public products. Lotus (as ever) have put in extensive
work into the back end, security, interoperability and standards based
products, and it would be a shame for the front end to let them down. Microsoft
have a fabulous habit of concentrating on the excellent front ends they
provide, but with a poor back end running it (lets not get started about
standards!!). I agreed that the ST client, even the built in one,
could do with a bit of a reshape. But then again, maybe that isn’t
where the product is going. As IM "integrates" with Lotus
Notes, and any other application, there will eventually be no "client"
for sametime. It will just be part of every other application. This
is where IM is going on the desktop, and I welcome it. But then again,
users will always have a buddy list…. and no doubt that is where M$ are
going to spend time on the look.
I came accross this Galty
Technologies a few weeks ago
while we were discussing Blackberry options with a customer. I had
heard acout Galty
Explorer but hadn’t seen it
until then. Its an excellent little utility that allows Blackberry
users to browse their Active Directory file servers remotely. They
find the file they want, can pull it down and mail it on. Excellent
product that does exactly what it promises. If you are a Blackberry
User/Administrator. Its really worth a look. For the exceptionally
cheap price of the software, its an instant value add win.
P.S. Irish company. Well done!
Taken by my XDA2 today so quality is
poor. Smart driver decided to play chicken with tram. All quotes
for picture accepted :-).
Just a tip. Many of us are used
to the following Notes client error in 6 when you are setting up
a new user on a client machine.
"Your certificate has not been
yet signed by the Certificate Authority"
This is a well
documented error that is caused
when the CA process is used to create users. The CA task has not
yet run and signed the id file of the user you are setting up.
"The certificate in the person
document will be signed and updated only after the CA task on the Certificate
Authority server has run and the ADMINP task has run on the Administration
server. "
This error appears on the Notes6 client,
BUT there are plenty of Notes5 clients still in circulation. Since
Notes5 has no idea what the CA process is, it cannot understand the error.
So, what happens??
On the Notes5 client, you will see:
"SERVER ERROR: UNABLE TO LOCATE
DECS CONFIGURATION DATABASE:NO ERROR"
Looks like the client is just taking
a stab at trying to determine the error. Not exactly pointing you
in the right direction but now you know.
Be warned……..
Notes Developer in Ireland wanted…
My company is hiring (again – yeah Notes
is dying…) and looking for a good Notes Developer with about three years
experience. Mail info@bluewave.ie or me with details and cv etc.
if you are interested.
With much scheduling, and re-scheduling, we have set our date for the Blue
Wave Technology open, free
technical briefing seminar. 7th December, in the Radisson
Hotel, Dublin, The agenda
for the day is yet to be firmed up, but we are looking at the following:
- Notes Domino 7 features (of course)
- I was thinking of presenting Lotus ADSync,
since I noticed a large growth in interest with customers upgrading to
Win2k3 - Bill
will be in town to demo
IDM for all to see (strongly
recommended). His fee is substantial, since I have to get him drunk
afterwards ;-) - Possibly demoing
Idokorro server management
for the blackberry users that will attend.Should be a good day. Any local readers that see this, I would appreciate
some comments on what you would like to see.
