Release date for XDA2s and XDA2a/i in Ireland

Most of you know my woes about losing
my phone in the US in January
.
At that point, there was 2 new XDA models out on the market in the
UK so I said I would wait until they were available in Ireland.  It
wouldn’t take long, would it?  Well its the same GPRS settings on
the new XDA isn’t it?  Surely it can’t take long….

wrong……………………

Still using my old (and very trustworthy)
Nokia 7110 which I have had since 1999.  I thought I would put up
the image to remind people of what was cutting edge a while ago (infra
red and WAP – kewl) Today, after numerous phone calls and been told blatant
WRONG information from O2, they let me know that they are expected to be
on the market in two weeks time (around 15th April).  No pricing as
yet.  Just thought I would let ye all know.  Well done O2.  Just
like Eircom, Ireland is playing catchup as ever…

User Group is not forgotten

To answer a few questions I had recently,
nope.. I haven’t forgotten.  There were a few delays but the website
should be up and running very soon.  After that, its your turn to
participate and get people registered.  I shall show little mercy
for the people in Ireland that talk about the lack of Lotus communities
etc after this is up and running!

Server replicas of your personal address book?

A call received from a customer today
pushed me to put this question out to the ‘sphere.  I have a replica
of my personal address book (PAB) on our office server.  My laptop
replicates with the server every 5 mins (along with apps and mail).  Additionally,
my workstation at home replicates with the office via VPN every 1/2 hour
or so.  This gives me three copies of my address book, and no matter
what changes I make to my PAB, it goes everywhere.  For the most part,
the majority of my customers still just use a PAB on the hard drive of
the machine.  Today (no prizes for guessing this one) a user wiped
his machine and didn’t have a backup of the names.nsf file.  Not much
I could do to help there.

Some of my customers use file server
installations of Notes software (Pro – don’t worry about the client. Con
- performance and LAN dependance).  Others use local installs and
even a few use notes roaming installs.  So my question is two-fold…

Do you replicate your PAB anywhere (or
at least back it up)?

How does your site (or your customers’)
deal with this?

Google down?

Its most likely just me…. but has
anyone else noticed that Google is down at the moment?  Tried .ie,
.co.uk and .com.

Update… Of course, it was me.
DNS entry from my ISP for Google went screwey for 2 hours.  For
a while, I thought there had been a hacking masterstroke.

Edinburgh Airport

<rant>

When is Edinburgh Airport going to get
a WiFi network installed?  I am willing to pay the fee.  I will
gladly hand over an extortionate amount of money for use of a WLAN for
and hour as there is nothing else here to do!

</rant>

Mr
Buchan
, I’m going to start
holding you responsible!  Even Dublin airport has WiFi these days
(also free btw).

Update:  Just found a T-Mobile
hotspot in the departure lounge.   Bit of a nightmare connecting to
it, but its better then nowt.

Yet another Policy Tip

My techy postings have been a bit sparse
lately, so I thought I would post this little piece of advice. On a site
recently that uses Organisational and Explicit policies to determine settings,
any new clients being setup were getting the following error:

"The signer of this note must have
Editor access and the PolicyCreator or PolicyModifier role to the Domino
Directory"

The error is pretty descriptive.  Check
the Owner/Administrator field of any policy documents that apply to the
client you are setting up.  They most likely have been created by
an account that does no longer have administrative rights to the directory.
In the case where I saw this error, the administrator that created
the policies was on leave, so his account had been removed from the administrators
group and locked out for that duration (???? I know, its crazy… but some
places actually do stuff by the book!  Just wish I saw more of it).
Since his account no longer had rights to the directory, his signature
could not apply the new policy.

Solution:  Well you have two choices.

(1) Use a specific id file to sign policies
with limited rights to the Domino Directory,  which will never be
removed.

(2) Change the Owner/Administrator fields
in the policy documents to the Administrator group name

Once I changed the fields to the Administrator
group name, it worked fine.
