Server replicas of your personal address book?

A call received from a customer today
pushed me to put this question out to the ‘sphere.  I have a replica
of my personal address book (PAB) on our office server.  My laptop
replicates with the server every 5 mins (along with apps and mail).  Additionally,
my workstation at home replicates with the office via VPN every 1/2 hour
or so.  This gives me three copies of my address book, and no matter
what changes I make to my PAB, it goes everywhere.  For the most part,
the majority of my customers still just use a PAB on the hard drive of
the machine.  Today (no prizes for guessing this one) a user wiped
his machine and didn’t have a backup of the names.nsf file.  Not much
I could do to help there.

Some of my customers use file server
installations of Notes software (Pro – don’t worry about the client. Con
- performance and LAN dependance).  Others use local installs and
even a few use notes roaming installs.  So my question is two-fold…

Do you replicate your PAB anywhere (or
at least back it up)?

How does your site (or your customers’)
deal with this?

    Actions, Synchronize Address Book

Basically I have replicated local address books in the past, but now I just make the that the user is on the iNotes template and make sure I synch it that way. That enables the new Blackberry server to get the address book wirelessly as well. Granted, it’s not automatic, but works well for people who only change their address book once in awhile.

    Take Care,

I replicate my personal address book, and I recommend it to clients, but few do it. In 6.5, there is “roaming user” support, and that will automatically put the personal address book on the server. But the trick seems to be making that work. I only tried once, and failed. Others that I know have had more success, but not necessarily trouble-free.

In the company I work for:
    1) If the user has a laptop, replicate the local address book to the server – if the laptop dies for some reason …
    2) If the user has a pda, replicate the local address book to the server – this is because of the sync’ing software that runs on the server.
    3) The 80% of the rest of the users do not have their local address book on the server – because they are on a citrix farm.
    4) The other 20% – we don’t really care …

Generally, we try to discourage the usage of local-address books and encourage the use the main secondary address books available on the server. Users maintain these secondary books via the intranet.
