Google Desktop Search. How its going to be??
Intelligent, Dynamic searching. If you are a Mac user, you have had
this for a few months. If you are a Lotus Notes user, you have had
it for 8 years (in your databases). If you are a Windows user………
one day, after "LongWait" it *might* be available.
I was not that keen on installing the Google Desktop Search engine on my
machine, as I keep most of my documents in Notes databases, and the windows
file search seemed adequate to me. Only after reading
that Google Desktop search now indexed Lotus Notes databases.
This spurned my interest, so I downloaded and installed the client.
and boy was I impressed…….
The search facility offers an amazing ability to find what I want
to find, all related, all in one query. I can search my mails, internet
history and files in one go. You can also open the email and reply
(which then Launches Notes for you). Excellent facility.
You have to enable the Lotus Notes plug in by following the simple instructions,
and then allow the mail file to be indexed. The desktop utility
indexes all files when your PC is idle and the Notes indexing is excellent.
Three extra tasks load on your machine responsible for indexing
and caching. I have a central point to search everything now… good
job Google. Smart move Lotus.
If you are using ND7B3 client though, its a wee bit flaky. Have had
a few crashes on the client when Indexing is running and you start using
Notes. But ND6 seems fine.
