Living in 2005

Thanks to Sean…
I
am afraid of what I agreed with here….

You know you’re living in 2005
When:

  1.  You accidentally enter your password on the microwave.

  2.  You haven’t played solitaire with real cards in years.

  3.  You have a list of 15 phone numbers to reach your family
of 3.

 4.  You e-mail the person who works at the desk next to you.

  5.  Your reason for not staying in touch with friends and
family is that they don’t have e-mail addresses.

  6.  You go home after a long day at work and you still answer
the phone in a businesslike manner.

  7.  You make phone calls from home and you accidentally dial
"9" to get an outside line.

  8.  You’ve sat at the same desk for four years and worked
for three different companies.

  10.  You learn about your redundancy on the 11 o’clock news.

   11.  Your boss doesn’t
have the ability to do your job.

  12. You pull up in your own driveway and use your cell phone to
see if anyone is home.

  13. Every commercial on television has a website at the bottom
of the screen.

  14. Leaving the house without your cell phone, which you didn’t
have the first 20 or 30 (or 60) years of your life, is now a cause for
panic

and you turn around to go and get it.

  15. You get up in the morning and go online before getting your
coffee.

  16. You start tilting your head sideways to smile. :)

  17. You’re reading this and nodding and laughing.

  18. Even worse, you know exactly to whom you are going to forward
this message.

  19. You are too busy to notice there was no #9 on this list.

  20. You actually scrolled back up to check that there wasn’t a
#9 on this list.

Not too many posts in the past weeks

Its been pretty crazy here.  At
the moment, I am dealing with some misbehaving servers, two new rollouts
and numerous support calls / meetings.  Aside to that, arranging the
ILUG meeting (its booked out already by the way!) and the
Irish
Workplace Live day on 8th September

is taking up a lot more time.  Aside to that  I am really
starting to play with the Workplace 2.5 beta and trying to get lots of
other things done.   Be patient, both of you…

What RAID array to use for Domino Servers

Well, its an age old question really.  What RAID configuration should
I use for a Domino server.  Simple answer…  You want to play
safe, go RAID 5, but downside is performance.

Site outages…

Some re-working this weekend.  Hopefully,
next time you see this site, you will be really looking at a DB2 backend.
Why?, well why not I suppose.  A Blogsphere site does not really
require DB2 backends to run it (as this site in total is about 30MB), but
it will be nice to run it for a while anyway.

Just completed the Sametime 7 installation……

.. and I was really, really hoping for a new look for the Sametime client.
The new client image is to the right.   It looks old and clunky
compared to the newer LCS clients and free messenger client software.  Its
a great product, but as ever Lotus will be hurt by the front end.  Carl
pointed the

lack of development of the GUI in the releases of Sametime since the beginning
.
Not much has changed here.  Sametime is the best corporate IM
product, but its the pretty front end that users will go for.   Lotus
has learned with
Hannover
which looks amazing, and the integrated IM client is excellent, but the
dedicated client needs a revamp!

Update: – as I have been linked to by
Peter’s site now, I just want to clarify one point.  Presence awareness
in Sametime/Domino is not in question.  Run a 6.5x client and you
will see it everywhere.  In fact, this site will be IM aware in the
next few weeks, all using the simple code that comes for usage with sametime.
You will be able to tell when I am working on my site (or even reading
it), and chat with me.  My post was about the thick client, thats
all.

New Attachment screen in ND7 Beta 4

Hats off to Lotus.  At long last an attachment open screen users *should*
understand easily.

ND7 Beta 4 upgrade here…

The new title made me smile after upgrading my Notes client .  Upgrading
the server to Beta 4 was straightforward enough.  The upgrade partially
failed with errors:

"(Jul 12, 2005 10:14:47 PM), , com.installshield.wizard.platform.win32.Win32SelfRegisteringFiles2,
wrn, Error unregistering e:\Lotus\Domino\nlsxbe.dll – regsvr32 returned
exit code 3"

..Easy solution… In my haste I broke the golden rule of not rebooting
the machine after disabling the domino service before upgrading.  Still,
everything worked.  Unfortunately, the
ND7
issue with SMTP authentication

issues still causes issues.  I have
posted
this before
and there are some
workarounds, (and
Chris
Linfoot’s post
is very useful)
but simply reverting to the older web configuration on the server document
keeps everything working.

Overall, the upgrade was easy and worked flawlessly….  Its funny
that even though I have so much information kept on pmooney.net these days
(hidden and public), I didn’t bother running a full backup. That’s product
confidence!
