A unusual new competition for Lotusphere 2007

I get strange ideas – usually technical,
but sometimes just damn odd.  Last year, some people may have been
walking between the Swan and Dolphin and saw some idiots racing the pedal
swans across the lake.
Photos
are
here.
 Well, they were
Warren,
Bill,
Devin
and I… and it was a good laugh.
I was chatting with Devin this evening and thought about having a "Lotus
Bloggers paired swan race" competition.  A few heats and a final…
with some really tacky prize for the wining couple.  What do you guys
think?  We could hold it at lunch times so not to interfere with sessions…
Well – are ye interested?

Scottish User Group on September 7th in Edinburgh

Flights to Edinburgh are cheap, from Ireland and the UK.   Next Thursday’s event is lining up to be a little gem.   Don’t forget these User Group sessions are free, and usually contain speakers that cost money to get to in other events.  That evening, there is a geekdinner planned, were the usual free consultancy for beer applies (was a great success at the ILUG event).    Of course, after the 5th or 6th beer – do not take anything we say as "good advice".  If you want to book a seat, mail  Claire Woodbury from IBM.

The “Bill and Paul show” ..

Made me laugh reading this thread on Ed’s site.  Had a chuckle thinking that Bill and I are associated on the speaker track with global, Domino related F**k ups.

Port security tip on Domino servers

Ok – taken from my Admin Blast presentation.  This is one of the things I look for when conducting a security audit of a domino domain.  Domino servers can offer many services… POP3 server, IMAP, LDAP, HTTP etc.. and each of those services run on different (usually standard) ports.  A lot of the time, on specific tasks are running on your domino server, not all of them.  For example, its relatively rare to find a domino POP3 server.  Now, POP3 uses a standard port (110) just like HTTP uses port 80 by default.  Bad guys know this…

If you are not planning to use specific domino tasks that require ports (e.g. POP3) disable the port in the server document.  This prevents the unintentional or intentional activation of the task/port on your server.  If the port is disabled (as shown below) the task will fail when you try to load it.

This applies to HTTP, LDAP, IMAP, POP, DIIOP, SMTP, RDebug etc.  Of course, your firewall should be taking care of this… but never assume and don’t forget on the LAN – there is rarely a firewall between the clients and domino servers.

Worst Practices needs you!

Yes… its finally there.  Albeit with a few small niggles to work out, the Worst Practices site is spawned.  This is the offspring of

a: A drunken conversation with Buchan… that led to …

b: Apparently one of the most successful presentations at Lotusphere 2006

The site allows you to read the worst practice stories, that Bill and I will update and add to from time to time.  Not only that, but you can submit your stories to the site.  Now just for those hard of thinking… we do NOT want to know the customer’s name, and Bill and I will have to approve the story before it goes public.  This is to ensure that it is safely anonymous.  Look at some of our other stories up there to get an idea on how to submit.  Please help on this one… as Tim Clark said this year "you could tell each story was true… as you just can’t make s**t like that up!".  They are all true, and we want your true stories aswell.  If we like them, we will laugh… if we really like them, we will use them in our travelling presentations!

So, think up of all the crap you have gone through and what you have learned from those events, and share your pain and lessons learned.

Slight change of pace on the SNTT front?

Not a tip.  More of a question.  Recently, I am spending more
and more time on Websphere.  I was going to start posting some Portal
tips and possibly a few bits on Domino/Websphere Portal integration.  Kinda
"Portal tips for Domino admin weenies"  or PTFDAW…  Any
comments or objections to this?

Happy Birthday Declan

Declan Lynch gets another year older today.  I cannot abuse him to much on this as I am not that far behind.  Happy Birthday Dec.
