The BES SNTT post last week…

Was downloaded over 300 times since I posted it, with some good feedback.  I have not forgotten my Websphere promise, but I was also going to write an article on migrating BES to run on a "real" SQL server as opposed to the desktop engine.  Is anyone interested in this one?

IBM Certified Advanced Security Professional certification

Its not often I post about passing exams, but I believe not many people have passed this one yet.  And yes, it’s a bitch of an exam.

Moving a Blackberry 4.x server running on Domino that uses the MSSQL Desktop Edition Engine

Ok guys, This post is far too long to put in a blog, so I have created the first PDF draft of instructions on how to move BES running on Domino.  This is a DRAFT and I would appreciate feedback and comments to make it more comprehensive and better, for the greater good.  I was of two minds to blog this or not, but after talking with Kevin and Warren, thought I would give it a go.  There are a few ways to skin this cat, and this is just one of them.  Please, if I have left anything out, just let me know and I will add it in, with attribution.

Objective:

Move the BES to a new Domino server, without affecting users (except for downtime of the move of course). This is the same “Domino” server, but you have moved it to new OS/hardware etc.

Home based SAN/NAS – hoping for some comments

I am finding that with VM Ware and Virtual PC, Music files, multiple domino/Websphere installations and photos/documents I just keep on running out of disk space these days.  I know quite a few of ye guys now have one, but I would like some opinions on which to buy.  The Buffalo Terrastation looks like an ideal solution (Ben
and Warren
both have them).  What other models are on the market that ye lot approve of?  I would much prefer a NAS over any form of DAS.

Migrating a certifier to the CA process doesn’t work

One that caught me recently!   You try to migrate the certifier to the CA process and an error occurs "Server certificate can not be located".    You are working off the server, on a LAN connection.  So what is the problem?  Its rather easy really – If (like me) you work with local mail files all the time, with scheduled replication, your location document is set to use the local mail file (Location document – Mail  - Mail file location), the migration tool cannot find the public address book.  Change this to "On Server" and retry – it works then.

Live post from Scottish Notes User Group

A packed room today, with over 60 people attending.  Graeme Clark (IBM) is currently giving the strategy session, with an excellent line-up of sessions to occur during the day.  Pictures of the day (and night) will be posted later today to Flickr.  This is my view (note the section to the left had to be opened to accommodate extra delegates).

`Thoughts from the train

Currently on the ICE doing 160kph (that’s slow for this train) en route to Schipol from Gelsenkirchen.  Bill
and I are sitting at the back, having a Warsteiner and a bite to eat, while discussing the Admincamp
event.  Overall, it was very good, with a better location then the previous Entwicklercamp
camp.  It was well organised and managed, with good entertainment (much of it supplied by Bill) and some good conversations.  The attendees were positive and eager to ask questions. My "Adminblast" presentation went well.  It was the first time presented to an audience, but it definitely seemed to work, and everyone that attended admitted there were some points that were new to them.  Worst Practices went well yesterday, with new admin stories to compliment some of the classics.   As per usual, people run up afterwards to tell us there horror stories.  We agreed to let them tell us, as long as they submit to the website aswell.  Bill, as ever managed to be overheard from just about any point in the hotel, and everyone knew him by the time he left.   Volker
took some great photos, and, not surprisingly tortured me with his new Mac.  Seriously… the machine was just too nice.  I need to get one.  Any chance of an admin client that will run on it?  (yeah right).  Last night, we had a few hours of "quiet time" outside with Bill, Volker and I discussing just about everything while sipping beers.  A nice way to end up the evening.

This evening, Warren and Kitty have the pleasure of our company before the SNUG event tomorrow.  Don’t forget the geekdinner tomorrow night.  The more then merrier.
