En route to Admin2008

Although I have not mentioned it…
em at all (or very little) I will be in Boston for the rest of the week
presenting at Admin2008.  I will be presenting revised (or repeated)
versions of last year’s presentations, and will have one or two new ones.
So, feel free to come over and say hello.  The usual suspects
will be there as ever.  I hope to blog (this week) reviews of sessions
and some photos.  Considering I am away from many other things for
the week, it may be semi-normal on this site!

Not a lot going on here

With ILUG around the corner (there are
very few seats left at this stage) and Admin 2008 in Boston next week,
and the day job and some personal matters to attend to, pmooney.net has
been *cough* content light of late.  I have done some interesting
work recently, which will be blogged about, just when I get the chance.
So, Im not breaking the "do not apologise for not blogging"
rule here, just responding globally to the "are you still alive"
emails.

Proof that ILUG does Irony

Eileen Fitzgerald and I are at "Pre
ILUG status".  In plain words that means we are talking twice
a day and bitching/fighting constantly.  Its normal at this stage…
we spend 3 months a year (at least) at this.

Anyways… we just are so busy with
our real jobs that we are constantly trying to find time to physically
meet and say hello/discuss/argue/arm wrestle/fight etc.  For the past
few weeks.. "when suits you.."  "No… Im away that
night"   "We need to get this done" etc etc etc.

Guess who I bump into on my flight from
Dublin to Amsterdam today.  Bloody typical! ;)

For the record… when it come to "organising"
the event, its Ms Fitzgerald…   Lotusphere should hire the gal!!
(before getting shot by IBM… Lotusphere is amazingly well run…
she would just be good at helping out and most of the best practice track
are scared of her!).

Time Machine on the Mac

Just a "for the record" statement.
Time Machine does not backup VM’s well.   I learnt that the
hard way.  Bill told me this is well discussed on the Mac blogs, but
I dont read them.  Lots of people moving to Macs that use the most
excellent VMWare fustion – just be aware of this guys…..

If you are an Administrator, vote for this

I often scream about this one – many people agree with me on it – lets see if we can make Lotus notice….

IBM has RUINED my spelling

Ok, its an ASW title but I wanted to
see if I was alone.  Since I am doing a lot of work with Quickr….
I find myself typing the word "quicker" as "quickr"
all the time… instead of "quicker".  I added "quickr"
into my custom spell check dictionary so it would stop prompting me to
change it to "quicker" and boy am I regretting it.  I just
did it so I could get my work done quickr… DAMN!

Or… if you really want to piss of
Darren Adams, call it QuickR.

ILUG attendee list

Currently over 400 people are registered
for ILUG.  This means there are still spaces.  Of course the
DTTP
rules still apply.  I was
asked at LCTY where people are coming from to attend ILUG.  Here is
a cut of one of the views of the database that rules us all at the moment.

Think  Lotusphere online.. but
works.

DWA Lite

Most likely my favourite feature from
ND801 is DWA lite (followed by traveller  - yes its spelt with 2 "l’s"
here – I speak proper English!).  I have a small theory.

DWA lite is a rewrite of the DWA template
using "clean" fast as f*&k code, making for a FANTASTIC web
mail experience.  It has limited features at the moment.  This
will change over the releases as current features are rewritten into DWA
lite, until DWA Lite becomes DWA.  This, I think is a great idea.
What makes it even better is that when DWA lite becomes DWA, it will
of inherited legacy code.  So, Lotus work on the next Gen DWA lite.

Anyways, Im a lowly admin guy – could
be completely wrong, BUT DWA Lite is my standard webmail client.  I
only use DWA if I need to.   Many people are following suit.

Is the chicklet the new black?

A picture named M2

Like it or hate it – you have to admit
that the chicklet (or style) is getting some airplay these days.  The
iPhone
has started to make the icon based
interface very cool again.  Although Lotus Notes has had it for …
em… 15 years or so, it has not really improved since R4 and the advent
of the bookmarks database.  It was planned to get a good oul revamp
in ND8, but fell slightly by the wayside.

The sign of a very good IT company is
one that sometimes rethinks its approach to things.  Lotus have done
this in the past (*cough  workplace *cough*).  Maybe its time
to look at the chicklet?  I go to many Lotus Notes sites.  And
the vast majority of customers use the workspace, regardless of the version.
I ask at many presentations about bookmarks versus chicklets and
the answer is always in favour of the chicklet.  Volker conducted
a poll before… results are
here.
The fact that I (and I think
Mr
Lepofsky
) use the replication
tab is a sign of us being a geek.  Users seem to really like the chicklet.
With the new front end, and the expeditor framework, chicklets could
quite easily become very very cool.  This could be an option for the
user to choose.

What do you think?
