Lazyweb – playing music from iPhone 3g through car stereo
The problem with searching online a lot
of time is that there are so many conflicting answers, hence the lazyweb
question. I have a car (paired over bluetooth with my berry storm
and my iphone for calls). What I want is the ability to play music
from my iphone through my car stereo. It doesn’t have to be bluetooth,
it doesn’t have to be radio based (My experience with them has been poor),
it just has to be good and reliable. I had one fitted yesterday that
apparently "worked" until I tested it and it didn’t. So
it had to be removed.
So, do you play music from your iPhone
through your car stereo, and if so, how and is it any good?

Not my iPhone, but my iPod – using an FM transmitter. Works like a charm.
That said, I drive a convertible, and the wind noise is so bad, that I probably can’t really evaluate the quality. But it’s definitely comparable to radio.

Lars – which one? The one I had was terrible.

Best answer, depends on your car and stereo. Mine comes comes with pre-wired connections for iPhone & USB pens. Some manufacturers and other third party suppliers provide adapters.
Which car are we talking about?

Following are the 2 best option:
1.) If you car stereo has the USB connectivity for iPhone/iPode then nothing like it, it will be fantastic music.
2.) if not above then you car stereo should have aux-in input and then have a male-to-male cable and put one in iPhone headphone jace and one in car stereo aux-in jack, this will also give very good sound.
If none of anyone then forget playing and go for changing your car stereo or see if any additional assessor y for you car stereo is available which will support USB or aux-in.

I still use it, and I’m still happy with it. It’s really important to find a frequency that is really, REALLY, empty though. Being 0.5 off a major radiostation won’t help reception.

This looks like a great solution but I think the car stereo needs to support “Bluetooth Audio Streaming”

I have the VW iPod stereo. Wonderful. I can get a track listing on screen, etc.
I got a panasonic one for Squid from Halfords – 150 – and it had an iPod connector, bluetooth for phone, CD drive, radio..

You could check out a FM direct wired relay. Basically you take your radio out of your dash, place this little guy between the FM antenna the stereo, then replace your stereo and you are set. I had one of these with my satellite radio in a big city and never had any problems. You can check one out here { Link } . hope that helps

I’ve got an Aquarius 1500 FM Transmitter for my iPhone from MyMemory for about 20 quid. Seems to work fine but I like the sound of the one Bill got for Squid, my car radio LCD screen is a bit tatty.

Based on my experience with FM transmitters, here’s the list of solutions in order of preference:
Car that already comes with iPod interface (not the generic 1/8″ plug, but the real thing)
The Grom unit Tom linked to above
Car with generic 1/8″ adapter
Cassette adapter (if you have a cassette player)
Bluetooth adapter
Hitting Play on the iPhone/iPod and holding the thing up to your ear
Singing to yourself and your car mates

.
FM transmitter adapter. In any urban situation, these are dodgy at best, with the radio band being pretty crowded. The latest generation can scan around and find an idea station, but that will change at some point, then you’re fiddling with the stereo and iPod tuner to change it.

I use a tape adapter on mine. I set the volume at a level on the iPod touch where it’s clean and make the stereo amp do most of the work. Not perfect bit it works well enough for commuting xfor me.
At work Igo line out from the iPod to a proper jeadphonne amp and it sounds a lot better

I tried an FM unit. Miserable failure. I switched to a cassette adapater, and it worked so well that my daughter stole it for her car, so I had to buy another.

I only had an AUX input on my radio (Becker Traffic Pro GPS unit), so I simply fitted the iPhone-dock (supplied with the phone on the first generation phones) next to the dashboard. I then connect minijack from the dock to aux. Then I bought an extra blaupunkt cable so that my phone gets charged while driving.
I still have to use a bluetooth headset for calls though but it works great for music and watching the phone while driving.

My iPhone paired to the Sony in my Disco for both handsfree and audio.
In true Apple fashion “it just worked”.
I mainly use it to listen to podcasts so I can’t comment on the audio quality.
