Speed improvement loading Notes 852

A night in working on some customer issues this evening.  While working, I upgraded my Mac client of Lotus Notes to 8.5.2 beta from 851.  As I have been one to complain about load times in the past, I figured credit where it is due is deserved.  As ever, this is beta software so nothing is finished (yada yada).

A new option during the install is to pre-load some parts of the client with the OS.

So, below is a direct comparison of the load sequence for Lotus Notes after a cold start of my Mac.

And here is the warm start now.  This is very impressive.

Will get to doing a windows test.  Either way, it is looking good for 852.  Hopefully 852 doesn’t keep taking precedence during loading when it comes out.

    I have been able to get my 8.5.1 Notes client to load in about 15 seconds on my Apple Mac by editing my jvm.properties file with:
    vmarg.Xmx=-Xmx300m

    This is on a MacBook which is running with 4GB of ram. I have found that I have had to play with the value a bit because altering it too much in either direction causes Notes to become unstable.

    I am looking forward to getting my hands on 8.5.2

    Yeah we have used it in the past to speed things up. But its not applicable to users as its unstable and requires tech knowledge. Good to see the product naturally improving load time.

    Well, I am running Windows 7 on a ThinkPad T400 with 4GB memory and a SSD (Solid State Disk).

    Starting up Notes 8.5.2 after a reboot takes me less than 15 seconds (including replication less than 20 seconds – depending on number of new messages).
    Restarting Notes 8.5.2 without rebooting feels like switching from one tab to another in Notes.

    Have tweaked the settings in the file jvm.properties to this:
    # vmarg.Xmx=-Xmx256m
    vmarg.Xmx=-Xmx1024m
    # vmarg.Xms=-Xms48m
    vmarg.Xms=-Xms192m

    You know, load time would have so much more impact on me if only I would close Notes and log off more often.

    Hi, I’m interested in testing the version 8.5.2 beta of the Mac client of Lotus Notes. Where could I get it?
