UKLUG goes paperless!

In an effort to save trees, expense and aggravation UKLUG decided to break all the rules and for once, practice what we all preach.  One of the preaching cornerstones for the past 20 (!) years has been the paperless office.  Yet with our LUGs we have always given out printed sheets.  Well no more!  You have three ways to read the schedule.

  1. The www.uklug.info website and click on agenda
  2. A neat little custom application written by Paul Harrison that will take all the agenda offline for you.  Just point your device to m.uklug.info
  3. Use Teamstudio unplugged.  Teamstudio are the platinum sponsors and are about to release a full domino based, offline version of the agenda database.  Go to www.uklug.info/unplugged and follow the instructions.  It will take you to downloading the appropriate device client from the appropriate app store.  After that you will replicate down their demo database.  The UKLUG agenda database is not there just yet, but will be released on Sunday.  All you will have to do is click on “sync” and the new application will be provisioned to you.  While we are talking about it, come along to the sponsor keynote where you will see me talk about how you can use this tool to manage applications (I don’t talk code) along with demos and my experiences of using it.

    Nice idea.

    Congrats to Paul Harrison for the Mobile version. Though I think the implementation needed a little more thought.
    To add all the sessions you have to go into each separate session description (yes even the Coffee Breaks) scroll to the very bottom before you can click the include option. Then go back. Very long winded and painful.

    And a big fat hairy raspberry to TeamStudio for not doing a native BlackBerry implementation. Instead I have to run the Android version under the emulator.

    I was always struck to see all the paper wasted at Lotusphere so we went paperless. Excellent.

    I hope “paperless” does not apply to the toilets!

    Dragon,

    Thanks for your feedback, and comments taken on-board.

    Whilst it’s probably too late to resolve for this year, we’ll certainly see what we can do to avoid any unnecessary scrolling in future versions.

    @1,

    Or go to http://www.uklug.info, click on agenda then click ‘add to my calendar’. All done in two clicks…..

    Paul’s done an amazing job (for FREE) imho.

    @1, free conference, free apps, so of course the logical thing is to register complaints.

    Perhaps next, get all Gordon Ramsay on the soup kitchen workers for lack of seasoning, then criticise the hospital volunteers on selection of candy in the dish. Complain that the Corgi at the animal rescue doesn’t have pedigree papers, and your day is complete.

    Noli equi dentes inspicere donati.

    @1 – Perhaps Teamstudio are just following the market conditions when it comes to Blackberry relevance? This year I have seen Blackberry mindshare drop with my customers like a rock, tied to a larger rock. On Jupiter.

    As for critiquing the work of a volunteer, it is sometimes best done in private.

    @3 – Yes ;)
