This can’t be good

I knew it was acting up over the past few days, but the device after charging is almost too hot to touch, then this.  Battery life is also useless.  Trying soft reset and full restore.

Update – full reset partially works.  No spike in heat until traveler installed (EAS).

Update2: – full os wipe and set up from scratch.  All ok until EAS setup.

Update3: - device replaced in apple store, Belfast.  Genius guy picked it up and went “ok.. that’s WAY too hot” and immediately sourced a replacement.  No argument.  No fuss.

The apple magic trackpad

I started off with the apple mighty mouse.  Not good.  Then, onto the magic mouse.  Much better.  Now (well a week ago) I moved to the magic trackpad.   Being a Macbook Pro user / trackpad user,  using this device is simple for me, and already the magic mouse has gone from my desk.  Installation is exactly what you would expect from apple hardware.  Painless, and the feel and usage of the device is natural.  While other companies slowly realise that touchscreen desktops/laptops are counter-intuitive and tiring for users, apple nails it with the pad.

Recommended.

MS Word 2011 for Mac – carrying the torch

Good to see it continues the tradition of its predecessor. In fairness, it is a *lot* better then 2008 version.

New view

My new 27inch cinema display arrived last night.  Yes they are overpriced, but I find the screen quality and features to be worth it.  Additionally when I am not on a customer site I am at home.  I don’t watch tv.  It gets heavy usage.  So now I have my older 24inch display and the 27inch.  By default, you can only connect a macbookpro to a single display  screen.  I have the matrox dual head display product here so eventually I will have both screens hooked up simultaneously.  I’m just waiting for two adapter cables and then I will be good to go.

A good week for Evernote

I use Evernote for storing personal data.  This has replaced my tried and trusted Lotus Notes document libraries.  Data is tagged and available anywhere, on any device.  Local synchronisation (think replication) and a billion other features I don’t use.

I like the product and pay for it, but miss the ability to encrypt attachments (instead of just text).  Anyway I digress.  They offered their product this week on the Mac Appstore on it’s opening day.  It was a good idea.

Apple removes Wikileaks app from store

Launched on December 17, the $1.99 WikiLeaks App offered access to the whistleblower site and the @wikileaks Twitter stream and was described as providing “‘instant access to the world’s most documented leakage of top secret memos and other confidential government documents,” according to a Google cached version of the site provided by TechCrunch. The app was created by a third-party development firm called Hint Solutions, which lists Igor Barinov as its general manager.

But as of late last night, Barinov has confirmed both in his own Twitter feed and in an e-mail to TechCrunch that Apple has removed the WikiLeaks app from sale without further explanation at this point.

Google latitude for iPhone. Some issues

I have been using Google Latitude for a long time.  Predominantly on the blackberry.  It’s my product of choice for tracking friends over foursquare and many others.  Some time ago, Google released a browser based version for the iPhone.  Apple are the app store gatekeepers, and obviously they did not want to permit a “real” latitude app.  Now they have.  I noticed Google Latitude yesterday and installed.

And it works, and works well.  Until I tried to close it.  Latitude launches the GPS unit on the iPhone.  Close the app, and it keeps running.  Sign out of the app, and it keeps running.  It took a few hours to see this (without the product launched)

Restarting the device fully didn’t help.  Uninstalling latitude seemed to be the only thing that did it for me.  I would be interested in findings by other users.

Doublespeed option on your iPod

If I remember correctly, Carl Tyler mentioned this to me in a chat and I find it very useful.  When listening to tech podcasts, I typically use the doublespeed feature.  The podcast is played 2x speed, but the audio is formatted to still be understandable and not squeeky.  Very handy.  No offense to the This week in Lotus guys with the screenshot above.
