Unlocked iPhone 4s coming to US November

An option on Apple’s iPhone 4S preordering site reveals that an unlocked, carrier-free iPhone 4S will arrive in November, though Apple still hasn’t given a specific date.

This makes purchasing one more of an option.  I would suggest that potential contract-purchasers take out a calculator and get a sim-only quote from their provider.

In the US, the unlocked 64GB model is $849.00.  This is currently £546 or €632.  In the UK, the unlocked 64Gb model is £699 ($1085USD).  Nice to see the Apple exchange rate in full flow.   I think I will wait until I visit the US.

IPhone 3G tethering coming 'soon'

"Using the iPhone as a wireless
modem to share Internet access with a laptop has been off limits to owners
of the device so far. But Thursday, AT&T Wireless CEO Ralph de la Vega
said that tethering is coming to the iPhone 3G “soon.” De La Vega spoke
at the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco, where he was interviewed by TechCrunch’s
Michael Arrington."

iPhone Sync tool for Notes being developed

Considering the interest in this topic,
it’s worth a post on its own.  At DNUG, Kevin Kavanagh announced that
a sync tool for iPhone and Lotus Notes is in development, and demos will
be available soon.  Funnily enough, traveler was not mentioned in
that line.  Let the rumour mill begin!

iNotes Ultralite on firefox

Ok, this is going to sound dumb.  I
chose iNotes ultralite instead of iNotes lite when accessing webmail a
few minutes ago.  And do you know what, it was great!  Even faster
the iNotes lite, this gave me exactly what I needed, access to read email.
Blisteringly fast over a crappy link.  I know this is totally
not using a product for its intended purpose, but thought I would share
the event.  Give it a go!

Update:  Ed pointed out
this is in ND85 beta only at the moment.

IBM's FAQ document on Apple iPhone

While at UKLUG, I have managed to get an
IBM FAQ on the iPhone, outlining their answers to product questions, including
traveler, blackberry, features of iNotes Ultralite, plans for the future
etc.

iNotes in the 8.5 release)

Q. What devices/browsers does
Lotus iNotes ultralite work with?

A: iLotus Notes ultralite currently
supports Apple iPhone.

Q: What features does Lotus iNotes
ultralite provide?

A: Lotus iNotes ultralite provides
access to to IBM Lotus Domino® e-mail, calendar, and

contacts.

Q: Does Lotus iNotes ultralite
work with the native email applications on the

iPhone? "

To read the rest, download the pdf here.

There are no major surprises in this
document, and IBM do make a point that as a corporate tool, RIM should
still be considered (the more I use the iPhone, the more I like it, conversely
the more I do NOT believe it to be enterprise ready yet).  However,
it may assist you in answer the "what about my iPhone" questions.

The iPhone sucks at roaming

I am getting quite tired of seeing
this a lot:

Ya see… here’s the thing.  In Europe,
people tend to cross borders.  A lot.  Especially business people.
I know that the iPhone was made in the USA, and although us outsiders
have to practically audition to gain entry to the USA at this stage, once
you are in, your network coverage is relatively carrier static.

In Europe, its different.  Very
different.  Lets take my example.  I live in Northern Ireland
(aka the United Kingdom) and would use O2UK.  Once I cross the land
border to Southern Ireland, my phones would need to switch to Vodafone
or O2Ireland, or Metor.  Flying to other countries, which I am lucky
enough to do from time to time, means my phone needs to join many different
cellular networks.  This IS NOT data roaming.  This is just simple
GSM roaming (i.e. to make and take calls).   My blackberry just switches
network… as it needs to, and I can set preferred carriers if I want.
I can cross borders over land and the phone switches network, and
I can be on a call for that period.  Easy.

When my iPhone loses it network carrier,
it barfs and displays "no service", until I manually switch it
to another network.. and that can easily take time as the unit has to scan
and find them all.  If you don’t believe me, drive from Newry to Dundalk
(border crossing between Northern and Southern Ireland) with an iPhone…
You are disconnected for up to 5 minutes.

When I land in another country, taking
my blackberry out of flight mode is simple.  It just finds the preferred
network.  My iPhone sits there, looking pretty and confused, and even
trying to get it to select a new network takes AGES, and sometimes even
a restart.  Imagine this was my full-time business phone.

The iPhone, is not corporate ready.

Geek Irony – using iPhone to fix Blackberry issue

Using the iPhone to fix a blackberry enterprise server issue.
Over the weekend I was working on a BES and forgot to make one small change last night. This morning, after landing in Heathrow, and whilst on the move I managed to buy and install Mocha VNC software on my iPhone, log into the server and resolve the issue. Mocha VNC lite is available for free from the App store, but does NOT allow you to CTRL ALT DEL, which, effectively makes it useless if you lock machines.
The iPhone has a long way to go to catch up with the BES in the corporate world (including functionality and security) but it often makes you smile!

Tethering your iPhone as a modem for your laptop

Bill Buchan sent me this
link
yesterday.  I have not
tried it but its damn interesting.  This makes the iPhone a lot more
useful.  I had no interest in jailbreaking my phone until now….
This makes me want to do it.
