A call for help to the camera geeks out there.
Since I went digital have had my trusty Cannon Powershot S30 camera, and it has served me well. It has worked flawlessly for the past four years and takes a great photo. However at this stage, it is starting to date compared to all the other models out there. Battery life on the unit is now really bad and lotusphere is coming up and I don't want to be humbled by gadgetry this year. I enjoy photography and am looking for a good model. I was considering going digital SLR, but aside from cost, they are just a bit bulky for me. I will most likely swing to a small unit (easily fits in shirt pocket), with good features and quality. Has anyone made a purchase like this recently or have suggestions on what to buy/not to buy?

I just bought myself a Panasonic as well - the LX1.

sorry that the link is in german
Love the camera - I had a Canon S45 powershoot which was also good but this one is MILES ahead. Basically everything is the same as the FX8 but with a better lens (I think so at least) and it is 8 MPixel in 16:9 mode.

A friend of mine bought a Nikon S1 at Christmas and it is a very nice camera with a large viewfinder and easily fits into a shirt pocket.
I have an Olympus 8080 which takes great pics but is a bit clunky.
Have a look here for reviews http://www.dpreview.com and here to buy online http://www.pixmania.com
Cheers,
Val.

It has a cool image stabilizer, a huge display, a great Leica lens, and it comes in a slick black case. Ben's version is a little newer and seems to have better battery life, though I would still carry two at all times.

Sony do a nice 6MP cybershot which is very small, but suffers for battery life as a result. It also demands proprietary memort sticks which aren't so flexible or as cheap as SD cards and the like.
My Panasonic battery is good for 300 pics, but a spare battery and 1GB memory card cost me £50 together. Bargain.
This is a great review site featuring the older FX-7 model. Lots of other cameras featured on there too.
