Talking to an IBM'er, who tells you he has the beta install files for Sametime 7.5 on his laptop beside him, but he can't  give them to me!

ST 7.5 - get's the features from ICT. The guys at alphaworks have made life easier for the Databeam gang. ICT has been in use within IBM for over 2 years now. It's well tested and feature rich.

Is this a alternative to sametime.. NO.. Sametime is easy , this is'nt

combines the highly scalable one-to-many broadcast messaging technology in IBM MQ Event Broker, including the leading enterprise instant messaging capabilities of IBM Lotus Sametime, with Web services running on WebSphere Application Server and DB2.

5 - Agree. I have a meeting with IBM:ers on thursday when they are going to show me the 7.5 installed. I will lock the door and not open it before i get the install kit.
