Hey guys... MS have released a "new application analyser tool"!

QuickImage Category

Well...  I would love to say it was because they wanted to offset the hype on the ILUG day, but I know we are farrrrr from that important.  Click here for details.

There is a new Microsoft Application Transporter.

"Today,  Wednesday, June 7th, we are shipping the new Microsoft Application Transporter 2006 for Lotus Domino, as well as updated versions of Application Analyser 2006 and the Exchange-Lotus Notes Mail Connector.   The Microsoft Application Transporter 2006 is a tool that transfers data from Lotus Notes applications to Windows Sharepoint Services (WSS).

The availability of our tools will help customers make the transition from Lotus Notes to the Microsoft collaboration platform easier, faster and more cost effectively.

Key features of the new Microsoft Application Transporter 2006

  •  Designed to migrate data from Lotus Notes applications to WSS.
  • Ability to do custom data mapping from Lotus Notes to WSS.
  • Out-of-box migration support for Lotus Notes to WSS Discussion, Team Work Sites and Document Libraries
Migrate custom applications using modified data mapping files."

Please look at the image that is used as an example.  I would imagine this will most likely set Duff off in a rant.  It is a crappy Notes database migrated to WSS.   Of course it is.... If they used a professional Notes database in the example, people would be wondering why the hell you would migrate!

Also, much better than that.... there is a new Application Analyser.  So... what has changed in it compared to the old one.

"Microsoft Application Analyser 2006
  • New Reports include Templates, Replicas and Usage.
  • Flag when Last Accessed dates are not accurate, and use Last Modified dates."

Now... I have not installed this tool... but let me guess.  MS have not figured out how to get the application usage stats correctt.  So now they flag a database when the "Maintain Last Accessed Property" field is not checked.  Which it isn't on most production databases because it kills performance and is OFF BY DEFAULT!

So... I have hit a moment of truth.  Is there any point to me looking at the new one, and comparing to many reviews in the past... Or should I leave it with a simple "This tool sucks - don't trust it or the reports that it can create" and call it a day.....

Any comments?

Gravatar Image1 - Personally I would tell you not to bother Paul. As you said "leave it with a simple "This tool sucks - don't trust it or the reports that it can create" and call it a day..... ". On the other hand I know that if no one tears this crap into pieces, then MS will go around using it and will create an incredible amount of FUD.
Now go and enjoy ILUG; when you come back, if you have a couple of hours to spend.... I'll be the first one to check for the results of your tests.

Gravatar Image2 - Guys, the analyzer tool has not changed much at all. The flagging is painfully inefficient in its coding and the analysis is still very rudimentary. Nothing new basically, but the transporter is rather amusing. I am still "analyzing" it myself but watch my blog, I should have something to post about by tomorrow.

Gravatar Image3 - From my perspective, it would be great if you could make a complete review just like the ones you did for the previous versions.

We can already imagine how "good" this tool is of course but it would be great to have a complete review of it - maybe even including a comparison with the previous versions (if they can actually be compared)

Gravatar Image4 - Great David! Let us know how you get on.

Gravatar Image5 - I think once I recover from Ireland next week, I'll have to take a look at this.

Gravatar Image6 - Next week in Boston MA US is TechEd, a national Microsoft conference; the timing could be related to that.

Gravatar Image7 - Hi Guys, I think this tool sucks :P as when you migrate data from lotus notes to sharepoint discussion board you will see the following problems.

1- Data formatting is lost.
2- Embedded images are now attached to discussion and there is a hole at there place
3-Thank god Reply to Reply hierarchy is maintained but still a lot of bugs ... If you have a lot of replies in your database, when you migrate it to discussion board it will migrate it correctly but once you start deleting the Parent Message and then you try to reply any of the document ...the reply wont appear in the same hierarchy (Hierarchy gets disturbed if you delete any parent document).... and you may encounter some other problems ...

but it is good for an experience :) so enjoy...
