Websphere Portal Server 6.0 Installation.. Part 1

QuickImage Category

This hopefully is the first of many posts on Portal server for Domino guys...  Feedback would be great.

Ok, you know nothing about Websphere Portal Server... but know Domino/Sametime.  That is where I am beginning these little SNTT posts.  They are totally open to correction or (hopefully) productive comments.  First things first - what files do I need to download and install the product?

Well, there are many many many CD's that you can get to do this.  If you have access to download the files (i.e. a BP or Passport customer), you need the following:
  • C93LQML.zip
  • C93LWML.exe
  • C93LRML.exe
  • C93LSML.zip
  • C93M4ML.zip
  • C93LUML.zip

Now these files have to be expanded into a directory structure to make the install go smoothly, as opposed to being asked to supply directories during the install.  The following batch file (using unzip.exe) will unpack the files into the correct places to get you started:

"unzip C93LQML.zip -d e:\WPS6\W-Setup
unzip C93LWML.exe -d e:\WPS6\W-1
unzip C93LRML.exe -d e:\WPS6\W-2
unzip C93LSML.zip -d e:\WPS6\W-3
unzip C93M4ML.zip -d e:\WPS6\W-4
unzip C93LUML.zip -d e:\WPS6\W-5"

The structure should look like the following:

A picture named M2

Next post is on preparing the OS for the install.

Comments

Gravatar Image1 - forget to mention that you still need disk 5, but that's a "generic" one too.

Gravatar Image2 - Hi Paul,

Here's another tip for your readers.

If you need to have the CDs available for other O/S then all you need to download is the disk images for disk 1 & 2. You can LINK through to the setup, 3 & 4. This reduces the amount you have to download by a HUGE amount.

So here are the naming conventions used by the other O/S.

* AIX = A
* HP-UX = H
* i5/OS = I
* Intel Linux = IL
* PowerPC Linux = PL
* Solaris = SS
* Windows = W

But the important thing is that for each O/S you only need to download disk 1 & 2. The other 3 are the same for each O/S

I hope this helps.

Gravatar Image3 - Love the idea of a Websphere Portal focused blog. Tips, shared portlets, screenshots, etc... it just doesnt exist today.

Gravatar Image4 - Hi Paul,

Peed my pants when I read this. I have made a couple of attempts at getting WPS running but usually end up going slightly insane and throwing the towel in after a couple of days (and nights!).

I'm sure you are going to go more into this, but can you give me a quick idea of minimum RAM and processor to get a dev environment up and running?

Keep it coming!

Cheers,

Andrew.

Gravatar Image5 - Paul, I am a Domino guy and in the last years I have worked quite a lot with portal. I know how different are the two environments and the difficulties a Domino guy faces when starting with Portal.
I want to say this taks you are undertaking is great; can definitely help in making people understand Portal. I am with you 100%.
Not that you need it I am sure, but if I can be of any help, just tell me.

Keep up the excellent work, mate!

Gravatar Image6 - I attened one of your handson-Sessions at Lotusphere, it was fantastic...

Gravatar Image7 - Thanks for the help.

I couldn't find the W-3 file. Why can't IBM just call the files disc 1, 2 3..etc.

I downloaded C393018409sk30s.zip, then the installer asks for W-3??? Then I search IBM for W-3, and nothing comes up.

Making easy things difficult.

Thanks though.

I've got some free J2EE, Portal and WebSphere tutorials at { Link } if you're interested.

Thanks,
